Scientists Getting Closer To Finding Your Soulmate

26 Aug

If science was able to tell you who your “one” is, would you want to know? That’s the question introduced in the clever movie TiMER, which I highly recommend. Although I don’t think we’ll ever have a timer that counts down to the moment you first see your soulmate, scientists are coming close to finding exactly what attracts couples to each other. This research is used (hopefully) by booming online dating websites such as Chemistry.com to help you find your ”one”.

Previous research has found that couples tend to have more similar personality traits than two random people. In a recent study, Michigan State University researcher Mikhila Humbad wanted to find out whether this was because people are more attracted to people like themselves or if couples become more similar as they live and grow together.

“Existing research shows that spouses are more similar than random people,” explains Humbad. “This could reflect spouses’ influence on each other over time, or this could be what attracted them to each other in the first place. Our goal in conducting this study was to help resolve this debate.”

After analyzing personality data from the Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research of 1296 married couples, Humbad found that people do in fact choose partners who are similar to themselves and generally do not become like each other as the relationship progresses with years.

This research is another big step in the scientific study of romance. As more research is done to learn about the extent to which individual personality traits need to be similar for a successful relationship, the online dating industry will be coming closer and closer to matching you to your perfect partner.

As the art of finding a soulmate increasingly becomes a science, would you be more willing to rely on a website to find your “one”?
