As Valentines day fastly approaches, many women around the country are wondering whether the guy they like will like them enough to ask them out. And those who have been asked out, are wondering if the guy they were asked out by really truly likes them as much as they like him. Well ladies, the more you wonder, the more you will like him according to new research published by the Association for Psychological Science.
Researchers Erin R. Whitchurch and Timothy D. Wilson of the University of Virginia and Daniel T. Gilbert of Harvard University told 47 female participants, who believed they were participating in a study about Facebook as an online dating site, that male students from two other universities had viewed their Facebook profiles as well as those of 15 to 20 other young women. The women were then shown pictures of four men and were told that these four men either liked them a lot, liked them an average amount, or were either the ones who liked them a lot or liked them an average amount.
Whitchurch, Wilson, and Gilbert found that women who thought the four men liked them the most were more attracted to the men than women who thought the four men liked them only an average amount. However, the women who were unsure of whether the four men liked them or not were the most attracted to the men.
“Numerous popular books advise people not to display their affections too openly to a potential romantic partner and to instead appear choosy and selective,” the authors write. Women in this study made their decisions based on very little information on the men—but in a situation not unlike meeting someone on an internet dating site, which is common these days. “When people first meet, it may be that popular dating advice is correct: Keeping people in the dark about how much we like them will increase how much they think about us and will pique their interest.”
Do you think men would be most attracted to a woman who doesn’t fully show her feelings? Do you think women would be attracted at all to guys who actually like them below average? As Valentines day approaches and there is pressure to express your love, are you considering on keeping your feelings to yourself?
