Why We Love To Hate Rebecca Black

4 Apr

Today is Monday, yesterday was Sunday, before that it was Saturday, three days since Friday… If you haven’t seen the infamous Rebecca Black Friday video, you’ve probably heard about it via your friends on Facebook or Twitter. Since uploading the “worst video ever made” in February, this 13-year-olds video has gotten over 80 MILLION views and millions of comments / spoofs / parodies / tweets, most of them beyond mean.

Worst of all, most people don’t see anything wrong with these attacks on the 13-year-old. In fact, 76% of Good Morning America viewers agree with the attacks, while only 24% say she’s just a kid and to back off.

So why is hating this young girl for her song so addicting? Writing a hateful comment about Rebecca Black is an easy way to focus our energy away from the negative realities currently facing the whole world, including the wars in the Middle East, Japan earthquake / tsunami, high oil prices, unemployment, and even our personal lives.

Rebecca Black provides the entertainment we need to step away from the negativity that is currently our world. Unfortunately, writing extremely mean comments about Rebecca Black is only contributing to the overall negativity and rage we feel about world.

Is there a more positive way we can deal with everything that’s happening?

Wow. Very true, but lots of people are not aware of these energies unfortunately.

Definitely a good point and you’re right, we do find ways of projecting negative mental positions onto other people. I think this article demonstrates a healthy dose of meta analysis that we all need to embrace more than we do now.

I wonder what people would do if they actually realized the psychological mechanisms driving their behavior? !! Great post.

Haha… I think people would be really surprised if they were able to figure out what really drives their behavior. We tend to be really good at rationalizing our actions – although, most of the time, we get it totally wrong. There are some fascinating experiments about this!
